The massive Milan Derby takes centre stage this week with Inter taking on AC at lunchtime on Saturday. The two sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw earlier in the season thanks to an injury time equaliser from Inter’s Ivan Perišić and recent history suggests that another close game is on the cards on Saturday; only 1 of the last 11 meetings has seen either side win by more than one goal. Both are in the hunt for Europa League qualification this year, with sixth place likely to be enough to clinch that because of Lazio’s qualification for the Coppa Italia Final. AC currently occupy that sixth position, but Inter are just two points behind in seventh. Inter striker Mauro Icardi has 20 league goals this season compared to just 13 for AC’s leading scorer Carlos Bacca, but Bacca scored in the Milan Derby in AC’s 3-0 win last season whereas Icardi has yet to get off the mark in this fixture.
In the English Championship the end of the season is fast-approaching, and we have some big games coming up this week that may decide the automatic promotion spots. On Friday night Newcastle welcome Leeds to St James’ Park looking for the first of three wins that will guarantee them promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt. If results have gone their way earlier in the day then they’ll only need two wins, and their promotion could be confirmed on Monday evening if Huddersfield fail to win at Derby.
Before the football action we have another night of Premier League Darts, with Liverpool’s Echo Arena hosting Thursday’s arrows. With Michael van Gerwen easily the most consistent player on the circuit right now his place in the semi-finals is almost a certainty. That leaves three places up for grabs and five players realistically battling it out for those, with three points separating Peter Wright in second down to Adrian Lewis in sixth. Peter Wright has two games this week, with the second a showdown against Gary Anderson in the final game of the night. The result of that game, along with that of the van Barneveld v Lewis clash, will have a huge bearing on the league table.
